🧩 Heart Word Worksheets Vol. 4: 133 Word-Building Puzzles for Deep Orthographic Memory

Want sight word practice that actually challenges your students? This pack gives you 133 word-building puzzle worksheets that turn sight word memorization into real cognitive work, perfect for students who need to move beyond simple recognition into deep orthographic mapping.

This is the fourth volume in the Heart Word Worksheets series, and it's all about active reconstruction. Students don't just trace or copy. They unscramble, hunt, and shape every word using techniques rooted in the Science of Reading.

Join 220,000+ teachers using My Nerdy Teacher resources in their classrooms, with 73,000+ five-star reviews and counting.

💛 Why Active Reconstruction Matters

There's a big difference between recognizing a word and knowing it. Most sight word practice asks kids to spot a word among other words, or copy it onto a line. That's recognition. It's not the same as deep memory.

Real reading happens when kids can:

  • Reconstruct the word from its parts (unscrambling)
  • Distinguish it from look-alikes (find it)
  • Visualize its unique shape (word configuration)

These are the skills that build automatic, lifelong word recognition. Vol. 4 is built around all three.

💛 What Are Heart Words?

In the Science of Reading world, what used to be called "sight words," "trick words," or "red words" are now called HEART WORDS.

Most high-frequency words are mostly decodable. In a word like "said," the "s" and "d" follow regular phonics rules. It's only the "ai" in the middle that's tricky, that part has to be learned "by heart."

This approach is called orthographic mapping, and it's how skilled readers build their sight vocabulary for life. Kids who map words this way recognize them instantly, without flashcards, without rote drilling, without tears.

📦 What's Included

  • ✔️ 133 word-building puzzle worksheets (one word per page, alphabetized from "a" to "you")
  • ✔️ Pre-segmented graphemes for words with vowel teams (like "ou" in "you")
  • ✔️ Black & white, US Letter, totally printer-friendly
  • ✔️ Zero prep: open the file, hit print, done

📝 What Students Do on Every Page

Every worksheet uses the same 3-activity routine. Quick, focused, and effective. Kids master the format on day one and work completely independently for the rest of the year.

1. UNSCRAMBLE THE WORD + HEART THE TRICKY PART
Students see the letters or graphemes of the word out of order, then write them in the correct sequence in the boxes below. After unscrambling, they draw a heart above the tricky part of the word.
Why it works: forces students to actively reconstruct the word from memory instead of just recognizing it. The heart marking makes orthographic mapping explicit.

2. FIND IT
Students scan a 16-word grid and circle every instance of the target word among similar look-alike words.
Why it works: builds visual discrimination, the skill that helps kids tell apart commonly confused words like "was" vs "saw" or "on" vs "no."

3. BOX IT UP
Students write the word three times, fitting each letter into its correctly shaped box (tall letters, short letters, descenders). This is the word configuration technique used in structured literacy.
Why it works: builds orthographic memory through letter shape awareness. Kids learn to see the unique "shape" of every word, which is how skilled readers recognize words instantly.
