Self-Esteem Workbook for Kids Ages 5 to 9: for the child who says "I'm so stupid" every time something gets hard. 19 activities in two levels that help kids find real proof they are capable. Written with a U.S.-licensed clinical psychologist.

"I'm so stupid." "I'll never be good at this." "I'm the worst."

If you live or work with a young child, you have heard it. After one backward letter and a crumpled paper. In the middle of a homework meltdown. After losing a board game. Quietly, at bedtime, when you least expect it.

So you do what every caring grown-up does. You tell them they're smart. You tell them it's okay to make mistakes. You've said it a hundred times. And they look at you like you're just being nice. Some of them even say it out loud: "You HAVE to say that."

They're not wrong to doubt it. A child who already feels bad about themselves has nothing in their own experience to back up a big compliment, so it bounces right off. Research on praise has found that for kids with low self-esteem, over-the-top praise can even make them less willing to try hard things.

Kids don't believe what you tell them. They believe what they can see themselves doing. A skill they couldn't do last year and can do now. A friend they helped. A mistake they fixed. A scary thing they did anyway. This workbook helps kids find that proof in their own lives, write it down, and keep it. By the last page, they're not holding a list of things you told them. They're holding a record of things they did.

What it helps kids do

  • 💬 Turn "I can't" into "I can do a little bit." Kids learn to notice their stuck voice and answer it with a helper voice they'll actually use at the next hard math problem.
  • 🔁 Try again instead of giving up. They pick one "not yet" skill and color a stone every time they practice. Not every time they get it right. Every time they try.
  • 🙃 Stop treating mistakes like proof they're bad. They learn that what they did can be wrong without them being bad. Everyone messes up. They can fix it.
  • 🤝 Feel less alone. They map everyone in their corner, notice how they help others, and practice joining in, so one friend or one bad day stops being their whole world.
  • ⭐ Believe the good things you say. Instead of "you're amazing," you write down one real thing you saw them do. That's the kind of praise kids keep.
  • 💛 Have something to hold on to on hard days. Their finished pages become a folder of proof they can pull out when the stuck voice gets loud.

Built on three ideas kids can say out loud

  • 💪 I Can. Kids look back at what they've already learned and how they learned it, so the next hard thing feels possible.
  • 🤝 I Belong. They see the people who care about them, the ways they help others, and that asking for help is a skill, not a weakness.
  • 🔧 I Can Fix It. Everyone messes up, grown-ups included. Kids practice a kinder inner voice, a simple plan for making things right, and what to do when feelings get big.

✨ Why Grown-Ups Love It

  • ✅ You'll never wonder what to say. A short script at the top of every page tells you what to read and what the child does. A talk prompt at the bottom turns the page into a real conversation. No more winging it.
  • ✅ No more blank pages. Most self-esteem worksheets say "write 10 things you love about yourself." The confident kids fill them in. The kids who need it most leave them blank. Every page here has word banks and picture choices, so "I don't know" always has somewhere to go.
  • ✅ One lesson for your whole group. Every activity comes in two levels: a K-1 page to circle, draw and trace, and a grades 2-3 page with more writing and reflection. Your kindergartner and your third grader can sit at the same table. Nobody feels babied, and nobody feels lost.
  • ✅ Hands busy, guard down. Kids who shut down when you ask questions open up when they're coloring and drawing. The conversation happens while they work.
  • ✅ Praise that actually sticks. "Someone Saw Me" boxes give you a place to write one real thing you watched the child do. The rule is printed right on the page: say what they did, not what they are.
  • ✅ Two minutes of prep. Print the page, read the script, start.
  • ✅ Made for every kind of family. No baby photos needed. The family word bank includes foster mom, stepdad, carer, coach and neighbor.
  • ✅ Make it yours. All text is editable in Canva, so you can change names, wording or prompts to fit your students or your own child.

✏️ How To Use It

  1. Pick your level. Even-numbered pages are K-1, odd-numbered pages are grades 2-3. Print only the pages you need.
  2. Read the adult line at the top. It tells you what to say and what the child does.
  3. Do the page together, then use the talk prompt at the bottom.
  4. Fill in "Someone Saw Me" with one specific thing you noticed.
  5. Keep the pages in a folder. Kids come back to them later in the book, and on hard days.

Each activity takes about 15 minutes. One a week covers a full semester.

💛 Who It's For

K-3 teachers who want SEL lessons for morning meeting, small groups or the calm corner, without a slide deck or an hour of prep.

School counselors, especially if you're the only one in your building. Small groups, lunch bunches, 1:1 sessions, and a page for every self-esteem referral you'll see this year.

Child therapists and psychologists who need a gentle way in with kids who won't talk yet, plus structured pages to send home between sessions.

Parents of a child who has started saying "I can't" a lot more than they used to, and who are tired of saying "you're so smart" and watching it bounce off.

It is adult-guided, so children don't need to read on their own. It is written and illustrated for ages 5 to 9.

Who made it

Created by My Nerdy Teacher in collaboration with a U.S.-licensed clinical psychologist. Every activity is built on what child psychology research says builds lasting self-esteem: competence, belonging, and recovering from mistakes. Not affirmations. Not "you're special." Proof. The clipart was carefully created by an experienced designer, and the children on the pages look like the children in real classrooms.

❓ Questions You Might Have
We already tell her she's great every day. Why isn't that enough?

Because kids discount praise from the people who love them. To a child, you're their parent or their teacher, so of course you think they're great. What they can't argue with is their own evidence: the skill they learned, the friend they helped, the mistake they fixed. Keep the love coming. This workbook adds the proof.

Is this just affirmations?

No. There are no "I am amazing" pages. Every activity asks the child for something real they did, learned, fixed or tried.

Won't focusing on self-esteem make kids self-centered?

Not this kind. Nothing here tells a child they're special or better than anyone. Kids notice what they've learned, how they help other people, and how to fix their mistakes. That's confidence that doesn't depend on being the best.

Does my child need to read?

No. A grown-up reads the page. K-1 pages are circle, draw and trace, so a five-year-old can do every one of them.

My child has ADHD. Is this a good fit?

Many families use self-esteem work alongside other support, because kids with ADHD often hear a lot of corrections in a day. The pages are short and hands-on, and they focus on what the child did right. It is not an ADHD treatment, and it works best alongside the support your child already has.

How long does each activity take?

About 15 minutes. One activity a week covers a semester, or you can pull a single page when a child needs it.

Is it for older kids or teens?

No. It is written and illustrated for ages 5 to 9. Older students may find the pictures young.

Can a child do it alone?

It works best with an adult. The conversations are where most of the growth happens.

Do I need any training?

No. The adult script is printed on every page, and it was written with a clinical psychologist. You bring the pencil and the listening.

Will this work for a whole classroom?

Yes. It is a digital file you can print as many times as you need for your own students. Print the K-1 pages for your youngest, the 2-3 pages for the rest, and run the same lesson.

Can I edit it?

Yes. All text is editable in Canva, so you can change names, wording or prompts.

Is it therapy?

It is a supportive SEL and counseling resource, not a replacement for mental health treatment. If a child is in distress, please reach out to a qualified professional.

Stop arguing with "I'm stupid." Give them proof.

Print one page tonight. Do it together. Write down what you saw.

⬇️ Instant download. Print your first page in two minutes.

Not sure where to start? Try "Stuck Voice, Helper Voice." Your child names what the stuck voice says ("I can't"), then finds what the helper voice answers ("I can do a little bit"). Then watch what happens at the next hard math problem.
