Self-Esteem Workbook for Kids Ages 5 to 9: 19 activities in two levels that help kids find proof they are capable. Written with a U.S.-licensed clinical psychologist.
"I'm bad at everything."
If you work with young kids, you have heard it. Maybe it came with a crumpled paper, or a shrug, or a child who won't even try the new thing. So you tell them they're smart, they're special, they can do anything. They look at you like you're just being nice.
They're not wrong to doubt it. Kids with shaky confidence don't believe big compliments or "I am amazing" affirmations, because nothing in their own experience backs them up. Research on praise shows that for these kids, over-the-top praise can even make things worse.
What actually builds self-esteem is proof. A skill they couldn't do last year and can do now. A time they helped someone. A mistake they fixed. A scary thing they did anyway. This workbook helps kids find that proof in their own lives, write it down, and keep it.
Built on three ideas kids can say out loud.
- ๐ช I Can. Kids look at what they have already learned, how they learned it, and pick one "not yet" skill to practice and track.
- ๐ค I Belong. They map the people who care for them, notice how they help others, practice joining a game, and learn that asking for help is a skill.
- ๐ง I Can Fix It. Everyone makes mistakes, grown-ups included. Kids practice a kinder inner voice, a simple plan for making things right, and what to do when feelings get big.

โจ What Makes It Different
- โ Two levels of every activity. A K-1 version with pictures to circle and space to draw, and a grades 2-3 version with more writing and reflection. Same lesson, so a mixed group can work together.
- โ You never have to wonder what to say. Every page has a short adult script at the top and talk prompts at the bottom.
- โ "Someone Saw Me" boxes. The adult writes down one real thing they watched the child do. The rule is printed right on the page: say what they did, not what they are.
- โ Word banks and picture choices on every page, so the child who "can't think of anything" always has a place to start.
- โ Pages that build on each other. The goal from "Not Yet" goes on the Try Tracker. The Proud Page sends kids back through the book to find their own examples. By the end, they're holding a record of what they did.
- โ Made for every kind of family. No baby photos needed. The family word bank includes foster mom, stepdad, carer, coach and neighbor.
- โ Fully editable text in Canva. Change names, wording or prompts to fit your students or your own child.

โ๏ธ How To Use It
- Pick your level. Even-numbered pages are K-1, odd-numbered pages are grades 2-3. Print only the pages you need.
- Read the adult line at the top. It tells you what to say and what the child does.
- Do the page together, then use the talk prompt at the bottom to turn it into a real conversation.
- Fill in "Someone Saw Me" with one specific thing you noticed.
- Keep the pages in a folder. Kids come back to them later in the book, and they make a great reminder on hard days.
One activity a week covers about a semester. Counselors can also pull single activities for a specific need, like "We All Mess Up" for a perfectionist or "Joining In" for a child who plays alone.

โ Questions You Might Have
Does my child need to read?
No. A grown-up reads the page. K-1 pages are circle, draw and trace, so a five year old can do every one of them.
Is it for older kids or teens?
No. It is written and illustrated for ages 5 to 9. Older students may find the pictures young.
Can a child do it alone?
It works best with an adult. The conversations are where most of the growth happens.
Do I need any training?
No. The adult script is printed on every page, and it was written with a clinical psychologist. You bring the pencil and the listening.
Is this just affirmations?
No. There are no "I am amazing" pages. Every activity asks the child for something real they did, learned, fixed or tried.
Will this work for a whole classroom?
Yes. It is a digital file with unlimited printing. Print the K-1 pages for your youngest, the 2-3 pages for the rest, and run the same lesson.
Can I edit it?
Yes. All text is editable in Canva, so you can change names, wording or prompts.
Is it therapy?
It is a supportive SEL and counseling resource, not a replacement for mental health treatment. If a child is in distress, please reach out to a qualified professional.
